Man rescued from river in County Donegal dies

A MAN who was rescued from the RIVER Erne in Ballyshannon, County Donegal on Sunday, February 11th, has died.

Gardai confirmed that the man, who was saved after a passer-by close to the Ballyshannon estuary, was taken to Sligo University Hospital.

Despite the best efforts of the authorities, he was later pronounced dead.

The man’s name has not been released but his family members have been informed.

The Malin Head Coastguard station who co-ordinated the rescue after the man was first spotted in the water.

A Rescue 118 helicopter was deployed along with Gardai and a Bundoran Lifeboat crew.

All three rushed to the scene to begin an intensive search of the area.

The man was spotted a short time later, despite challenging weather conditions.

Rescue services faced heavy rain and gusting winds.

The circumstances around the incident are unclear.
