Memorial football tournament for Celtic fan Sean McKenna raises over £3,000 as hundreds turn out

THERE was a great turn out for Sean McKenna this weekend as hundreds showed up for a memorial football tournament in his memory.

A total of 120 players took part in the event at McKenna Park in Govan, a town near to Glasgow, with proceeds going to Missing People Scotland – a charity which helps the families of people who disappear.

Over £3,000 was raised in memory of the late 24-year-old as over 200 spectators watched on from the sidelines.

Sean, 24, went missing in the early hours of October 10 last year after leaving a friend’s house in Coatbridge, a town near to Glasgow.

Seventeen days later on October 27, Police confirmed that a body found in Coatbridge’s Wooden Loch was Sean’s.

Sean was a huge Celtic fan and regularly attended games at Celtic Park with his dad James.

A keen footballer, he often played at McKenna Park – home to local team St Anthony’s FC and named after his grandfather who chaired the club.

The memorial tournament was arranged to coincide with what would have been Sean’s birthday on April 26.

“With over 120 lads and lasses playing and something like 200 to 250 people in the crowd it was a great wee day,” dad James said.

“We raised over £3,000 for Missing People Scotland and I just hope it helps some people going through what we went through.”

The big winners in the memorial cup were Cotters Galacticos, who overcame Minskies Midnight Runners in a tense final which ended 1-0.

Scottish politicans Tommy Sheridan and Fulton MacGregor were among the 120 who pulled on their socks and shorts to play in Sean's memory.
