Murder investigation launched after man fatally stabbed in early morning assault

GARDAÍ have launched a murder investigation after a man stabbed during an early-morning assault passed away from his injuries.

David Boland, 34, sustained multiple stab wounds during the incident on Duke Street, Athy, Co. Kildare at around 5.30am.

He was taken by ambulance to Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise but later died.

RTÉ reports that the father-of-three from Nurney, 12km from Athy, was stabbed following a row.

A party was taking place in the area but he had only recently arrived before he was attacked.

His silver Audi was taken after the attack and found partially burned out on Woodstock Street.

“From our enquiries to date we understand a number of people were in the vicinity when this incident occurred and we would appeal to anyone who was in the Duke Street area at approximately 5.30am this morning to come forward," said Superintendent Martin Walker.

"We would also appeal to passing motorists, and in particular those with dashcam footage, to contact us here at the incident room.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Athy on 059 863 4210, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or at any garda station.
