Woman arrested over alleged assault on shop worker who asked her to wear a mask

A WOMAN has been charged following an incident in which a shop worker was allegedly assaulted after asking her to wear a mask.

Gardaí in Co Sligo are investigating the serious assault, which occurred this past Saturday evening at approximately 6:45pm in Sligo Town.

The incident occurred when a woman, described as being in her early 20s, entered a shop without a face covering of any kind.

Under government guidance, masks or other face coverings must be worn in shops at all time to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

In this instance, the woman was informed of her failure to wear a face mask.

She reportedly left the shop soon after but subsequently returned and allegedly assaulted a female member of staff with an unspecified implement.

The female staff member was struck several times before the assailant left the shop, fleeing on foot.

The shop worker’s injuries were so bad she required hospital treatment.

She was taken to Sligo University Hospital where her injuries were described as “non-life threatening".

The attacker later presented herself voluntarily at Sligo Garda station, she was arrested by gardaí and detained at Ballymote Garda Station.

She has now been formally charged and is due to appear before Sligo District Court on Thursday, January 21st.
