An Post unveils WB Yeats stamp to celebrate 150th anniversary of the birth of the poet

AN  POST has unveiled a stamp to celebrate the 150th anniversary of WB Yeats, featuring a picture taken in London.

The commemorative stamp was unveiled today to mark tomorrow's 150th anniversary of the birth of the Irishman who won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1923.

The stamp was unveiled in Sligo, a place of inspiration for the poet, by Yeats scholar and Irish ambassador to Britain Dan Mulhall.

The stamp is based on an iconic image of the poet from London’s National Portrait Gallery by photographer George C Beresford.

Accompanying the stamp issue is a First Day Cover containing well-loved and remembered lines from the poem Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven.
