Icy stretches across Ireland as temperatures drop below freezing overnight

MET ÉIREANN have warned of icy roads across Ireland as temperatures are set to drop below zero overnight.

While the west of Ireland through west Munster and Ulster is to experience heavy showers today, temperatures across the country will be below freezing tonight.

Today will also be a bright day with temperatures remaining at a steady 6 to 7 degrees throughout the country but widespread frost is to set in early this evening and into tonight.

Under clear cold skies tonight into early Friday morning, temperatures will drop between -2 to 1 degree, with northwesterly winds, with a frosty start to Friday through to the mid-morning too.

The weather authority warned that icy stretches will form on untreated roads tonight.

The icy weather follows a snow-ice warning for the west of Ireland yesterday, while a status yellow wind warning was issued for much of the west coast.

Into the weekend, bright clear days are set to remain from Friday through until Monday with clear frosty starts to the day with the odd showers on Sunday and Monday evening
