AN INTERNATIONAL arrest warrant has been issued for Irish-born woman Samantha Lewthwaite, who was married to one of the July 7 London bombers.
Interpol has issued a “Red Notice” on the terror suspect - known as the 'White Widow' - cementing the Co Down woman's status as the most wanted woman in the world.
The development is likely to lead to further shock for the friends and family of the radicalised housewife in Banbridge, Co Down, where she used to live an unremarkable life.
Ms Lewthwaite is wanted on charges of possessing explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony dating back to December 2011.
The 29-year-old has been linked with the Somali Islamist group al-Shabab, who have claimed responsibility for an attack on a shopping centre in Kenya’s capital Nairobi last week. The assault has left at least 67 people dead.
Interpol did not link its warrant to the attack, but it comes after much speculation linking Ms Lewthwaite to the events at the Westgate complex.
The Down-native’s husband Germaine Lindsay was one of the four suicide bombers involved in the 7 July bombings in London, which killed 52 and injured hundreds.
Interpol secretary general Ronald Noble said: "By requesting an Interpol Red Notice, Kenya has activated a global 'tripwire' for this fugitive.
"Through the Interpol Red Notice, Kenyan authorities have ensured that all 190 member countries are aware of the danger posed by this woman, not just across the region but also worldwide."
