Irish lockdown measures to be eased on Monday - here's what's likely to change

THE FIRST phase of the Government's planned reopening of the country will take place this Monday, 18 May, after a consistent drop in coronavirus cases and deaths in recent weeks.

The Irish Government have laid out a plan for the phased reopening of the country and economy, with some businesses, such as DIY and hardware shops, to open first, and businesses where it is more difficult to maintain social distancing, such as pubs and nightclubs, to be the among the last to reopen in Phase 5 at the end of August.

The first Phase in the Government's plan will occur this Monday, and while things will be far from back to normal, there should be some easing of restrictions which will allow friends and family to see each other again.

Here's what is likely to change this Monday, 18 May, in accordance with the Government's plans:

  • People should still stay at home as much as possible, however:
  • Up to 4 people who don't live together can meet outdoors while keeping at least 2 metres apart
  • School and college buildings will be opened for access by teachers for organisation and distribution of remote learning
  • Outdoor workers, such as gardeners and those who work in construction, will begin a phased return to work while adhering to social distancing requirements
  • Certain retail outlets, particularly those that are primarily outdoors sch as garden centres, homeware stores and farmers markets, can reopen while adhering to social distancing requirements
  • Certain other shops such as opticians, bicycle repairs, electrical shops and phone sales and repair can open
  • Outdoor tourist spaces and beauty spots which allow for social distancing can reopen (eg beaches, mountain walks)
  • People can exercise in groups of no more than four people while maintaining social distance
  • Public sport amenities such as pitches, tennis courts and gold courses, can be reopened where social distancing can be maintained

People who can work from home are urged to continue to do so, and there are no indications of when schools will reopen for children.

Restrictions regarding funerals will remain the same, with attendance kept to a maximum of 10 people, with only members of the household or close family or friends.
