Man denies murder of fisherman in Irish village

A MAN has appeared on court charged with the murder of a fisherman in Ardglass, Co. Down.

Jason Carr, 20, from Castle Heights in Ardglass appeared at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court today charged with the murder of Stefan Zait.

The 45-year-old victim died in hospital on Thursday, two days after suffering serious head injuries in what police described as a ‘brutal and senseless’ attack.

The Romanian had lived in Northern Ireland for six years and was a popular figure in the fishing village.

Carr was also charged with attempted aggravated burglary at a property on Crew Hill Court in the village with intent to inflict grievous bodily to Mr Zait.

A defence solicitor said Carr denied both charges but would not apply for bail out of respect for the victim’s family.

Carr was remanded in custody to appear at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court via videolink on June 14.

A 50-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman arrested on Friday in connection with Mr Zait’s death have been released on bail.
