PRESIDENT Higgins and his wife Sabina rounded off day one of their historic State Visit by attending The Queen’s State Banquet as the guests of honour on Tuesday evening.

Among the 160 guests at Windsor Castle was Martin McGuinness, a former member of the IRA and now Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister, as well as acting and sporting royalty, including: Daniel Day Lewis, Judi Dench and Fiona Shaw and Six Nations winner Brian O’Driscoll.

Earlier in the day the President delivered an address to the House of Commons and the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster, in which he declared, "I am very proud of the large Irish community that is represented in every walk of life in the United Kingdom."
