Picture of road markings painted over dead cat in Kerry sparks outrage

A SHOCKING image of a dead cat lying on the side of the road in Kerry with yellow markings painted over its legs has sparked outrage.

Earlier this week, the photograph was sent to Animal Help Net Kerry, which published it on its Facebook page.

The post triggered numerous responses, with spokeswoman Wendy O’Connor writing “shame on those concerned,” along with the picture.

“Nobody cared enough to move this poor cat who had been killed by a car and the line was painted over it.

Further angry comments followed, with some people describing the incident as “shocking,” “callous,” and “heartless.”

It is believed that the cat was struck and killed by a vehicle on the recently resurfaced road in Ballyheigue, late last week.

Sub-contractors working on behalf of Kerry County Council then painted over the cat.

Kerry County Council apologised for the incident.

A spokeswoman at Kerry County Council’s Roads, Transportation and Safety department, confirmed to The Irish Post that an investigation will be carried out.
