Are The Sun having a pop at the Irish with Wayne Rooney family reference?

THE SUN newspaper claim a football agent has said Wayne Rooney likes to drink because of the ‘Irish-origin family he comes from’.

The England captain was pictured allegedly intoxicated at a wedding in the national team’s hotel in Hertfordshire after being given the night off when on international duty last weekend.

The images appeared in The Sun this week and were published online on Tuesday, with the newspaper claiming Rooney was “almost too drunk to stand”.

Rooney's paternal grandparents are Irish and his wife Coleen, whose maiden name was McLoughlin, is also of Irish descent.

One of The Sun’s supposed sources, named only as an ‘agent’, apparently told the paper: “Wayne’s always liked a drink. That’s the culture and type of Irish-origin family he comes from”.

A spokesman for Rooney has since told The Mirror: “During the course of the evening he was approached by numerous fellow guests for autographs and pictures.

“As he has always been, Wayne was happy to sign, pose for photos and chat with guests. It is sad that one or two of them have now sought to turn Wayne's friendly good nature to their advantage.”
