Irishman Eoin Morgan to captain England against Ireland

EOIN Morgan will captain England when they take on Ireland for the second time at the revamped Malahide ground in Dublin on September 3.

Morgan, 26, and Derry’s Boyd Rankin – both former Ireland cricketers - have been selected for the one-day international (ODI) in Morgan’s hometown of Dublin.

The pair will face Ed Joyce and Morgan's Middlesex county team mate Paul Stirling; Joyce used to play for England on International duty but has now returned to represent Ireland.

England are resting many of its senior players for next week’s match and the following one day-series against Australia, ahead of the next Ashes series which begins in Brisbane on November 21.

Alaister Cook, Stuart Broad, Ian Bell, James Anderson and Graeme Swann are set to miss the match against Ireland after England’s recent 3-0  Ashes victory.

Five cricketers are to make their international senior début in the England squad, including uncapped pace bowlers Chris Jordan and Jamie Overton.

Morgan began his England career in 2009 when he was named in the squad for the ODI series against the West Indies.

Next week Morgan will be returning to the ground where he began his Leinster senior career with Malahide in 2000; he was part of the team that captured the Irish Senior Cup in 2002.

He may find the newly transformed international venue barely recognisable since then, as it is now a 10,000 capacity venue which is looking to be a sell-out.

Ireland squad : William Porterfield (captain) (Warwickshire), George Dockrell (Somerset), Trent Johnston (YMCA), Ed Joyce (Sussex), John Mooney (North County), Tim Murtagh (Middlesex), Kevin O'Brien (Railway Union), Niall O'Brien (Leicestershire), Eddie Richardson (North County), Max Sorensen (The Hills), Paul Stirling (Middlesex), Andrew White (Instonians), Gary Wilson (Surrey).

England squad: Eoin Morgan (captain) (Middlesex), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Ravi Bopora (Essex), Danny Briggs (Hampshire), Jos Buttler (Somerset), Michael Carberry (Hampshire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Jamie Overton (Somerset), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Taylor (Notts), James Tredwell (Kent), Luke Wright (Sussex).

*This post was updated from a previous version which wrongly claimed Paul Stirling played for England and Eoin Morgan's England career began in 2007. It was in fact 2009. The Irish Post is happy to clarify this error.
