Ireland's hockey team claim historic win over Britain

IRELAND'S LADIES hockey team claimed a historic win over Britain's side on Sunday, largely thanks to an impressive second half performance.

A late penalty scored by Rose Upton helped Ireland to beat the Olympic champions Great Britain in Belfast and set up a major series decider on Tuesday afternoon.

Britain won the first game of the series on Saturday, but it is all square now after Ireland's dramatic win on Sunday.

The sides meet again on Tuesday in the deciding game of the series before all eyes will turn to Tokyo where they will be rivals once more in the group stage of the Olympic tournament.

Cool as you like.

Captain Katie Mullan was delighted after the win, saying: "We’ve never beaten Great Britain before and they’re Olympic gold medallists so it is pretty special.

"The character of the girls in the second half was second to none and I am so proud of our performance.

"At international level, it is fine margins and we fought the tough fight to stay in it in the first half. We came out guns blazing in the second half and nothing was going to stop us."

Roll on Tuesday!
