LAST Saturday the London GAA Youth Committee hosted a successful tournament in Greenford to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising, the first of a series of events.
Teams of Under-12s and Under-14s, plus supporters, travelled over from Roanmore, Co. Waterford, to make up two of the five teams involved.
From London, St Clarets and Parnells provided U14 teams, while Tara’s U12s took part too, with six games being played at 10 minutes a half in wet conditions at the home of Tir Chonaill Gaels.
Roanmore’s U12s enjoyed a productive afternoon with two wins and the Waterford side were also successful in the U14s, beating Parnells 2-4 to 0-3 in the final.
Meanwhile, London GAA have confirmed the dates of further commemorative tournaments to mark the centenary year of the Easter Rising - a landmark event in Ireland’s history - starting with the Michael Collins Cup Schools Tournament on Friday, April 22, in Greenford.
That will be followed by an U10 and U12 blitz in Ruislip on Saturday, April 30, from 10am to 2pm, while over in Greenford on the same day Tara camogie will be hosting a 7s tournament.
On top of that, a mini exhibition match is expected to take place at half-time during London’s meeting with Louth in the 1916 Commemoration Cup between the senior footballers on May 1, followed by a London Ladies’ 7s tournament on bank holiday Monday, May 2.
Elsewhere, the Warwickshire County Board will be hosting an evening to reflect and remember the events leading up to and including the 1916 Easter Rising on Friday, April 15.
It will involve discussions and presentations on the events of the Rising and they would like to welcome all Gaels to attend the evening at Paírc na hEireann at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available on the night also.
