Bristol pays tribute to a parade great as part of its St Patrick's Day celebrations

IN a more poignant moment amidst its St Patrick’s Day festivities, Bristol Irish Society paid tribute to a special member of its annual parade.

In a mark of respect a minute’s silent was held for the late Bill Plenty, a former fireman who as Major of The Avon Glen Pipe Band had led the Bristol parade since its inception in 2000.

BIS President Amelia Dunford said: “Every year the weather has been good to us and this year was no exception. But there was a tinge of sadness this year as the Major of The Avon Glen Pipe Band, Bill Plenty, passed away recently."

She added: "He will be greatly missed by his family and band members. His funeral was this week. We held a minute’s silence as a mark of respect.”

This year’s parade was once again a colourful affair with Bristol Samba creating a lively atmosphere long the route, which saw the Lord Mayor Alastair Watson and Lady Mayoress Sarah Watson join in the fun.

A number of music and dance events were also held in the town, with performances by Philip English, The O'Malley Academy of Irish Dance, Peel Your Own Spuds and the Scott/Scallan Academy of Irish Dance.
