Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron passes away following cancer battle

Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron has passed away following a long battle with cancer.

The talented Dublin-born songwriter, whose real name is Philip Ryan, died at around midday today.

A statement from the Pogues read:  After his recent illness we are so sad to say dear Philip passed away peacefully this morning. We send our sincere condolences to his family.

He suffered from a recurrence of head and neck cancer and was first diagnosed with throat cancer in the summer of 2007 and had been undergoing treatment since.
