The Pogues Shane MacGowan debuts brand new smile after nine-hour dental operation

HE IS probably known for his imperfect smile as much as Fairytale of New York - but Irish singer Shane MacGowan has a brand new set of teeth to show off this Christmas.

The frontman of The Pogues is the subject of a new Sky Arts documentary - Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn - which first aired at the weekend.

Now, fans of MacGowan can see his new teeth for the first time.

The veteran singer had a full set of 28 teeth, including one gold one, fitted during a nine-hour dental procedure.

The new teeth, fixed to a titanium plate, were shown for the first time in the documentary.

MacGowan had the procedure performed by Dr Darragh Mulrooney - an occasion caught on camera by the documentary makers.

This is not the first time MacGowan has made the effort to fill in his smile.

In 2009, he was fitted with a set of dentures which he later called a "botch job" - and two years ago, his long-term girlfriend Victoria Mary Clarke said he would be having dental work done to allow him to pursue a film career.

Years of substance abuse left MacGowan's teeth in fragile condition and he lost his last natural tooth in 2008.

Viewers of the documentary can see him eat his first apple in 20 years after having his new teeth fitted.
