IT WAS in the weeks after the 9/11 terror attacks that Paddy Moloney found himself standing in lower Manhattan, overlooking the smouldering devastation of Ground Zero.

The Chieftains had travelled to New York to honour a devoted supporter who had been killed in the atrocity, and like so many others, Moloney struggled to comprehend the scale of what had happened.

The air was still thick with smoke and grief. Moloney later recalled walking cautiously among the ruins, carrying the instrument that had defined his life.

He played Táimse Im’ Chodladh, the haunting Irish air also known as I Am Asleep.
