A Cork street has been named the best in Britain and Ireland

THE best street in Ireland and Britain has been revealed - and it's in Co. Cork.

Oliver Plunkett Street in the city centre was named The Great Street for 2016 at the Urbanism Awards Ceremony in London on Friday.

As Ireland’s only entry, the street beat finalists from London and Liverpool to receive award.

Also up for the prize was Deptford High Street in London and Cairns Street in Liverpool.

Judge Alastair Barr said that Oliver Plunkett was one of the best-organised communities that they’d seen in the competition.

This year marks Oliver Plunkett Street's 300th birthday.

First opened in 1715, it was named for the newly crowned King George I before changing its name in the 1920s after Irish independence.

Today, the street is a major shopping street for Cork city.
