Belfast studio launches new Gaelic football video game

A NEW Gaelic football video game which captures the ‘speed, skill and atmosphere’ of the Irish sport is set to launch this month.

Gaelic Football Laochra will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam as of May 28.

Developed by Belfast studio Buck Eejit Games, the release marks the first Gaelic football video game launch in nearly 20 years.

“Gaelic football means a huge amount to people across Ireland and the wider Irish community, but it has been missing from the games space for far too long,” said Buck Eejit Games founder Peadar McMahon.

Gaelic Football Laochra is fronted by Armagh's Aidan Forker

Armagh’s All Ireland-winning captain Aidan Forker fronts the game, which allows players to take to the pitch in quick matches and tournaments.

They can also play in career mode, managing their squad across the seasons.

“The game also features responsive, skill-based gameplay, intelligent AI movement, the latest changes to the sport’s ruleset, local multiplayer, dynamic match commentary from Michael D McAndrew, and an extensive creation suite for building custom players, kits and teams,” Buck Eejit Games confirms.

“This has been a massive undertaking for our team, and we are incredibly proud to finally put Gaelic Football Laochra in front of players,” McMahon said this week.

“We wanted to make something that feels recognisably Gaelic football - fast, intense, tactical, chaotic, emotional and full of personality.”

The new game launches this month for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam

For Buck Eejit Games, the project is also a statement of ambition for the local games industry.

“We are a Belfast studio making a game about a sport that is deeply rooted in Irish life,” McMahon explained.

“It matters to us that this has been built here, by people who understand what the game means.

“We know how long fans have waited for another Gaelic football title, and we cannot wait for them to get their hands on it.”
