Dragons’ Den Ireland star wants to run in Irish presidential election

BUSINESSMAN and Dragons’ Den Ireland star Gavin Duffy has revealed he is interested in running for president.

Duffy, the only Dragon to appear on all eight series of the show, confirmed he is seeking the four nominations from local authorities required to stand as a candidate.

Duffy, 58, a consultancy and communications expert, is due to speak to Waterford City and County Council this week.

If nominated, Duffy said he will run “the most modern, dynamic, interactive election campaign possible”.

Duffy, whose venture capital portfolio has focused on recruitment, professional development, education and media, has previously coached and advised a number of Taoisigh.

If the entrepreneur receives four nominations, he won’t be the first Dragon to run for president.

Seán Gallagher, who appeared alongside Duffy in the first three series of the show, received 28.5 per cent of first preference votes in the 2011 presidential election, finishing second behind Michael D Higgins (39.6 per cent).

President Higgins has announced he intends to stand once again, while Sinn Féin will announce their candidate in September.
