Escaped drug smuggler caught in Costa del Sol

A DRUG smuggler jailed for his role in Ireland’s biggest ever cocaine haul has been tracked down in Spain more than a year after escaping a British prison.

Gerard Hagan, 29, was arrested by police outside a gym in the Costa del Sol last month.

The Liverpool native was jailed for 10 years in 2008 after admitting to his involvement in a botched attempt to smuggle €440million worth of cocaine into Mizen, Co. Cork.

The plot was organised by a former Scotland Yard detective.

Spanish police said that the fugitive had been on the run since escaping Preston’s Kirkham Prison on July 6 2012.

Hagan, of Stockbridge Village, is believed to have been alone when armed police from a specialist anti-drugs unit swooped last month.

Hagan appeared before a judge at Spain’s Central Criminal Court last Wednesday, where he agreed to be extradited.
