Former GAA player guilty in taxi driver kidnapping case

A FORMER GAA player is one of two men who have been found guilty of kidnapping, robbing and threatening to kill a taxi driver.

Robert Edward Tasker, a former GAA player with Armagh, and Antion Eugene James McCooey will be sentenced on June 18.

On November 29, 2016, the pair – who live at separate addresses in St Patrick’s Park, Cullyhanna, Co. Armagh – got a booked taxi from a Chinese restaurant in Dundalk, Co. Louth.

During the journey, Tasker, 26, put a knife to the driver’s neck while McCooey, 25, threatened him with a screwdriver and demanded money.

The driver gave them €120 before they eventually got out near Cullyhanna.

During the trial, the driver claimed the passengers threatened to rape and murder him and he thought he was going to die.

Tasker and McCooey were today convicted by a majority verdict on each of the charges.

They have been remanded in custody until sentencing.
