A GAA player killed in a road traffic accident in Kent has been laid to rest in Westmeath as police continue their appeal for witnesses to the accident.
Philip Ganly, who was on the Westmeath minor team last season, died after being hit by a lorry in the early hours of October 31.
An inquest into his death is due to held at Margate Coroners Court, however a date has not yet been confirmed.
The student, who had recently moved to Britain to attend University, was crossing the A2 near Canterbury when the accident occurred.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Kent Police said: “A man was in collision with a white Renault HGV prior to Wincheap slip road. We are continuing to investigate the accident.
A message on Maryland GAA’s Facebook page read: “A dark cloud descended over Drumraney as the shocking news of Philip’s passing spread among his friends and teammates.
“No one wanted to believe it at first, how could such a great young man with such a bright future be taken from us so soon? He could lighten the mood in any situation and make anyone smile.
“Philly was an extremely popular young man who made friends everywhere he went and will be missed by everyone he met. Words can’t describe how we all feel.
“Taken too soon from us. Our prayers are with your family. You’ll never be forgotten, always be a Maryland Star. RIP Philip Ganly.”
Mr Ganly is survived by his parents, Michael and Mary, brother, James, and sister Laura.
