Irish Government praises Scottish police over Karen Buckley case

THE Irish Government has extended its sympathies to the family of Karen Buckley - and commended the actions of the Scottish authorities.

A body was found yesterday evening in the search for the 24-year-old Cork native, who had been missing in Glasgow since the early hours of Sunday morning.

Though a formal identification has yet to take place, Scottish police believe the body is that of Ms Buckley, and her family has been informed.

“I am greatly saddened by the news emerging that Scottish police believe that a body discovered near Glasgow may be that of Karen Buckley,” said Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan.

“On behalf of the Government, I wish to express appreciation for all that has been done by the Scottish authorities, and especially Police Scotland in Glasgow, to find Karen and to support the Buckley family throughout this very difficult time.”

Ms Buckley’s parents, Marian and John, flew to Glasgow on Tuesday as the search widened.

The Irish Consulate General in Scotland has been providing assistance to the Buckley family since news of the discovery broke.

The family’s local TD in east Cork, Seán Sherlock also expressed his sympathies to her family and friends.

“This is deeply upsetting news for the Buckley family and the entire community in Mallow and North Cork," he said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Karen in Mourneabbey, Cork, Glasgow and throughout the world.”

Scottish authorities have arrested man in connection with the incident.

In a statement issued this morning, the Greater Glasgow Police said: "A 21 year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with the death of Karen Buckley."

He is due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court tomorrow.
