Man (43) enters garda station with knives and hammer after smashing patrol van

A MAN is due in court today in Cork after he entered a garda station armed with two knives and a hammer.

Unarmed gardaí talked the man into surrendering two knives and a hammer, just moments after a garda vehicle was smashed up at Mayfield Station on the northside of Cork City.

The man, 43, walked into an area to the rear of the station building where all the windows and wing mirrors on a patrol van were damaged.

He then walked into the station where a knife was produced to the garda on duty in the public office.

He was then engaged in negotiation by the public officer and another garda.

They eventually persuaded him to hand over two knives and a hammer, and there were no reported injuries arising out of the incident.

The man was arrested and detained at the scene, and was subsequently charged with damage to the garda van and with the possession of knives.

He is due in court this morning charged in connection with the incident.
