Northern Ireland hits sixth day in a row with no coronavirus deaths

NORTHERN IRELAND has recorded six days running with no new coronavirus deaths.

The Department of Health confirmed yesterday that the six northern counties had recorded no new deaths from the virus, and just three new cases were identified within the community.

The new figures brings the total number of coronavirus cases identified in Northern Ireland to 5,769; the official death toll, at 554, is unchanged for five days-- the longest since the pandemic began.

There are 12 people in hospital with Covid-19, the Health Department of Northern Ireland revealed yesterday, however there remains no coronavirus patients in Intensive Care Units for the 13th day in a row.

In the Republic, a positive streak with no deaths came to an end yesterday, 9 July, when the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) confirmed that six more people had lost their lives to the virus.

23 new cases of coronavirus were also confirmed within the community, with more than half directly or indirectly related to travel overseas.

Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, said:

"We are seeing an increase in the number of reported cases over the last 2 weeks and the R-number is now at or above 1. There is an immediate need for all of us to take care and caution in our decisions and actions."

There have been 1,743 confirmed Covid-19 related deaths in the Republic of Ireland, and a total of 25,565 cases.
