Police arrest man in Rome in relation to assault on Irishman Sean Cox in Liverpool

POLICE in Rome, working with Merseyside Police, have arrested a 30-year-old man in relation to the assault that left Irishman Sean Cox in a critical condition.

Mr Cox, 53, was placed in an induced coma after being attacked close to Anfield Stadium ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League first leg tie against Roma on April 24.

The Meath native has reportedly regained consciousness after being transferred back to Ireland following five weeks of treatment in Liverpool.

Following an extensive investigation by Merseyside Police, the Rome man was arrested on a European Arrest Warrant on suspicion of assault following the incident outside Anfield.

He appeared in court in Rome on Saturday, October 6 and has been remanded ahead of an extradition hearing.

Two other men have already been charged in relation to the incident.

Filippo Lombardi, 21, was charged with violent disorder and wounding/inflict grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Preston Crown Court tomorrow, October 10, ahead of a trial due to begin the following day.

Daniele Sciusco, 29, admitted violent disorder and was jailed for two-and-a-half years on August 24.
