Shoreham pub defends sign with joke targeting the Irish

A SIGN bearing a joke aimed at the Irish outside a Shoreham pub is attracting attention for the wrong reasons.

A reader of The Irish Post got in touch after spotting the sign (pictured right), which he labelled offensive, outside The Ferry Inn pub in Shoreham-by-Sea.

The sign reads “7 course Irish meal – 6 pints and a free potato”.

But The Ferry Inn denies that any offence was meant by the sign.

“It was brought in to us by two of our regulars, Irish Des and Gerry,” a pub spokesperson told The Irish Post.

“We have a different joke out there every week or so. We’ve had stuff like ‘How do you make a blonde laugh on a Monday? Tell her a joke on a Friday’.

“Des brought in this joke so we put it up outside.”

The pub, whose clientele is about 40 per cent Irish, insists that no discrimination was intended by the sign.

“It was meant as a joke and everyone here has found it very funny,” the spokesperson said.
