A YOUNG mother tragically drowned in a lake in Co. Cavan while trying to save her child.
According to reports, a woman believed to be in her 20s got into difficulty after entering the water at Lough Gowna at around 8.30pm on Wednesday evening.
Gardaí believe she may have been trying to rescue her child, who was swimming in the lake.
It's understood she disappeared after successfully helping her child back to shore, and a search operation was launched to find her.
Her body was recovered just after 9pm, and was taken to Cavan General Hospital where a postmortem examination will be carried out.
