‘Road to Rio’ video captures the highs and lows of Ireland’s Olympics 2016 hopefuls

WITH the opening ceremony to Brazil’s 2016 Summer Olympic Games set to kick the illustrious tournament off tonight, here’s a little something sure to get you even firmer behind the Irish team.

RTE’s Road to Rio has captured the highs and lows of Ireland’s Olympic hopefuls as they give it all to win a place on the plane to Rio.

“Our Olympians represent Ireland to the world,” is the rallying call. “They give our nation a face. A heart. A story.”

And there are certainly stories to be told.

Think of the Irish brothers Paul and Gary O’Donovan, who claimed gold at the European Rowing Championships in Germany in May, and are set to star in Brazil.

Think of the remarkable gymnast Kieran Behan, who from brain damage to tumours in the thigh has had a bumpy ride along his incredible road to Rio.

“An Olympic cycle is 4 years long,” the video explains. “That’s 1456 days to change the course of your life. Moments of madness, bitter disappointments and life changing events.”

Tonight, it will be just one. Come on Ireland!
