The draft is back on the table

IN ANTICIPATION of a major war with Russia in the next few years, several European countries are introducing a form of conscription to enlarge their armies.

Rishi Sunak, the last Prime Minister, proposed doing something similar in Britain and the scoffing at the idea was general across the land.

But perhaps he was a little ahead of his time. He was certainly ahead of Germany and France.

The idea of conscription was recently defended by Rory Stewart in the podcast he does with Alastair Campbell, The Rest Is Politics. Campbell seemed uncomfortable about the idea.

As am I, but I ask myself why.

Conscription has always been a sensitive issue in Ireland.

It is written into our folk songs how the peasantry rejected the blandishments of the recruiting sergeant.
