'What is Aer Lingus?' American TV presenters think Lingus is an actual place in Ireland

US TV hosts Ryan Seacrest and Kelly Ripa made a bit of a gaff on their morning chat show when they asked where in Ireland Aer Lingus is named after.

The pair were discussing Delta Airlines swapping terminals at LAX on their show Live when the conversation moved onto the Irish airline.

After mentioning that Aer Lingus could also be moving terminals, Ryan Seacrest revealed that he thinks ‘Lingus’ is an actual place in Ireland.

The conversation then went something like this:

Ryan: “If you’re going to Canada, Air Canada. If you’re going to Lingus, Aer Lingus. I don’t know where that is… I think it’s in Ireland somewhere”.

Kelly: “I’ve always been curious about Aer Lingus, but I’ve always been too embarrassed to ask. I’m like ‘What is Aer Lingus?’ and I wanna go on it.”

It turns out that Aer Lingus comes from the Irish word aerloingeas, meaning air fleet. So not an obscure village somewhere in the west of Ireland, then.

Of course, Aer Lingus being Aer Lingus, the airline was quick to poke fun at the gaff and tweeted the hosts to visit them down at LAX.

No word yet on when Ryanair will begin flying to Ryan, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.
