Appeal after man sexually assaulted by private hire taxi driver

POLICE in Scotland have appealed for witnesses after a man was sexually assaulted by a private hire taxi driver with an Irish or Scottish accent.

They would particularly like to trace a man and a woman who came to the man’s aid following the incident in the early hours of this morning.

The 22-year-old man had been out for the night in Glasgow city centre around the Argyle Street/Union Street area.

At around 2.30am he got into a private hire taxi to take him home but during the journey the male driver touched him inappropriately.

The driver then made the passenger leave the taxi in Paisley, around 10 miles west of Glasgow city centre.

Not knowing where he was, the man flagged down a couple in a car and they took him to Paisley Police Office.

“The man and woman left before we could speak to them,” said Detective Sergeant Allison Campbell of Paisley Police Office.

“It would be really helpful to our investigation if they would contact Paisley Police Station as their information would assist our investigation.

“I would ask anyone who might have seen or was approached by the man in Paisley this morning to get in touch.”

The driver of the white car is described as being a white man in his 30s with dark shaved hair.

He was of heavy build and spoke with a Scottish or Irish accent.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Paisley on 101 quoting reference number 1271/28/10.
