Australian fire crew rescue 'gee-eyed' Irish backpacker who fell asleep on rooftop

AN IRISH backpacker has been rescued from the roof of a building in Darwin, Australia after failing to make it home to bed after a night of boozing.

The Irishman was issued with a fine after he told officers he decided the awning of Mitchell Street Tourist Precinct was a good place to go for a 'kip' after getting 'gee-eyed' on alcohol the night before.

It appears fire officers saw the funny side of the incident, marking it as one the calls for assistance that do not always make "total sense", and compared it to an unusual version of a "kitty cat stuck up a tree" incident.

“He promised to walk home and not get into any more vulnerable situations”, said acting Sgt Jacqueline Lynden after the rescue.

Writing on Facebook about the incident afterwards, Senior Sergeant Garry 'Uncle Gaz' Smith hoped it might even attract new recruits to the force.

"Every now and again we respond to community calls for assistance that do not always make total sense," wrote Sergeant Smith.

"NTES being called out to rescue someone apparently fallen off a ledge only to later find the ‘victim’ fast asleep at home or like this morning, the NT Fire and Rescue Service called out to (no not a kitty cat stuck up a tree) a backpacker stuck up on a roof after the ‘Gee-Eyed’ male decided this was a good place for a ‘kip’."

Sergeant Smith went on to suggest "applications to join the service were always welcome.
