Barack Obama says Donald Trump is treading a 'dangerous path' in refusing to accept election result and democracy

BARACK OBAMA has spoken out about Donald Trump's refusal to accept the results of the presidential election, stressing that his successor is treading a "dangerous path".

Mr Obama slammed Trump for his baseless claims of electoral fraud and criticised other Republicans for "humouring" those claims and refusing to speak out against them.

"I'm more troubled by the fact that other Republican officials, who clearly know better, are going along with this, are humouring him in this fashion," Obama said.

"It is one more step in delegitimising not just the incoming Biden administration, but democracy generally. And that's a dangerous path."

On Sunday, Trump appeared to finally acknowledge Joe Biden's victory with a tweet about election rigging, only to backtrack minutes later, declaring: "I concede nothing".

Trump, without saying Biden's name, tweeted: "He won because the Election was Rigged. NO VOTE WATCHERS OR OBSERVERS allowed, vote tabulated by a Radical Left privately owned company, Dominion, with a bad reputation & bum equipment that couldn’t even qualify for Texas (which I won by a lot!), the Fake & Silent Media, & more!"

It's the first time the current president has even entertained the idea that he might have lost the election.

He later tweeted: "He only won in the eyes of the FAKE NEWS MEDIA. I concede NOTHING! We have a long way to go. This was a RIGGED ELECTION!"

Trump continues to insist he has plans to launch a series of legal challenges designed to try and undermine the validity of the result.

However, despite offering up a plethora of legal suits, Trump's campaign team has yet to provide any significant or verifiable evidence of fraud.
