Derry man charged with murder after wife dies in car fire

A MAN has been charged with murder after his wife died following a car fire in Derry on Tuesday.

Thomas Rainey, 59, appeared at Dungannon Magistrates Court on Saturday via video link from Musgrave Street Police Station in Belfast charged with the murder of his wife Katrina.

Mrs Rainey was found by emergency services in a burning car at the family home on Quarry Road, Knockloughrim, at about 5.40am on Tuesday, October 12.

The mother-of-six was rushed to Causeway Hospital but passed away later that day.

During Saturday's hearing, Mr Rainey spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

No application for bail was made, with police confirming they believed Mr Rainey may be a risk to himself.

He is due to appear in court again on November 10.

Mrs Rainey's funeral took place on Saturday.
