Donald Trump says 99% of Covid-19 cases are 'totally harmless'

DONALD TRUMP has insisted that 99% of all coronavirus cases are totally harmless.

During his Independence Day speech, Trump decided to address the issue of the ever-rising number of cases in America after it was revealed that nearly 3 million Americans had tested positive for the virus and that at least 129,000 people had been killed by it.

Despite the US now being the hardest-hit country in terms of deaths and number of cases, the President has been insisting that such high numbers are a result of America's extremely effective testing system.

"Now we have tested almost 40 million people," Trump told reporters on Saturday.

"By so doing we show cases - 99% of which are totally harmless - results that no other country can show because no other country has testing that we have. Not in terms of the numbers, or in terms of the quality."

Trump has faced a heap of criticism for his handling of the coronavirus crisis to date, and with case numbers in the US now rising quicker than ever - with 43,000 confirmed in the last 24 hours - his consistent refusal to wear or promote the use of face masks or promote the idea of social distancing has brought about much scrutiny.

When asked about his reluctance to wear a mask, Trumps said: "It's a recommendation, they recommend it. I just don't want to wear one myself."

The President also insisted during his speech on Saturday that China be "held accountable" for failing to contain the spread of the virus.
