Escaped prisoner recaptured in Belfast pub

ESCAPED prisoner Derek Brockwell has been recaptured in a pub in the North of Ireland.

The PSNI have revealed that the Glasgow native stabbed himself when he was approached by officers.

“He produced a knife and proceeded to stab himself in the abdomen,” a PSNI spokesperson said. “To ensure no further injuries were caused to the man or others, police discharged a taser.”

It is understood Brockwell is now in a stable condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Brockwell, 53, was recaptured in the Bridge House Bar on Belfast’s Bedford Street at about 7.30pm yesterday evening (February 18).

He escaped from officers in Tallaght Hospital on Tuesday, after he had been brought from Portlaoise prison for an appointment.

During his escape, he stabbed two prison officers – one of whom required an emergency operation for the injuries.

Police in Britain and Ireland had warned he may have been bound for Britain, as he had connections in Scotland.

Prior to his incarceration in Portlaoise, he had been serving a sentence in Lancashire.

He has been re-arrested on suspicion of two counts of robbery and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.
