Garda shot dead by suspected IRA man who then turned gun on himself

A GARDA in Co. Louth was shot dead yesterday by a man awaiting a trial for IRA charges – the shooter then turned the gun on himself.

Adrian Crevan Mackin, 24, originally from Co. Down was named as the man who shot and killed Garda Tony Golden.

Garda Golden was investigating a domestic disturbance at Mackin’s home in Omeath, Co. Louth at the time.

Mackin also shot his girlfriend, leaving her with serious wounds, before taking his own life.

She has not been named but is described as being in serious condition.

The incident took place at around 6pm on Saturday evening.

Garda Golden, a married man in his 30s, was one of the officers who responded to a 999 call about a domestic disturbance at Mullach Álainn estate in Omeath, a small village near the North of Ireland border.

The President of Ireland and the Garda Commissioner were among those who led tributes to Garda Golden.

“This most serious and tragic incident has not only led to the death of a member of An Garda Siochana, while on duty, but tragically has also involved the death of one and the serious injury of another person," President Michael D Higgins said.

Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan paid tribute to her fallen colleague and also highlighted the dangers that members of An Garda Síochána face in the line of their work.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of my colleague in a fatal shooting incident this evening while carrying out their duties,” Ms O'Sullivan said.

“This incident highlights the unique nature of the job carried out by the men and women of An Garda Síochána, and the dangers they face every day.”

In January of this year, Mackin appeared before the Special Criminal Court charged with IRA membership.

He was awaiting trial at the time of his death.
