Gardaí arrest man 'pretending to be a doctor' at University Hospital Waterford

GARDAÍ have arrested a man on suspicion of impersonating a doctor at University Hospital Waterford.

The man, aged in his 30s, was detained last Sunday morning after reportedly wandering the wards of the hospital in theatre scrubs with a stethoscope and a pager.

According to the Waterford News & Star, another medical professional encountered the man in a staff bathroom and asked him which department he belonged to.

His cover was blown when he replied "dialysis", a department which was closed at the time.

Staff held the man in a waiting room until Gardaí arrived at around 9am and took him into custody.

Confirming the arrest, a Garda spokesperson said: "A man in his 30s was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to Waterford Garda Station."

No patients are believed to have been harmed during the incident.

Gardaí say their investigations are ongoing.
