Gardaí investigating links between killer Mark Hennessy and series of unsolved cases known as 'The Vanishing Triangle'

Gardaí are probing whether any links exist between the killer of Jastine Valdez, Mark Hennessy, and a series of unsolved crimes in the area in recent years.

According to the Irish Times, the DNA of the 40-year-old father of two will now be crosschecked on the DNA database for ‘any links to unsolved historical or recent sex crimes’.

A deeper investigation is due to be carried out into Hennessy’s past life, to establish if there exists any links to a series of historical sex crimes in the Leinster area in the 1990’s.

Referred to as the Vanishing Triangle cases, the victims included Fiona Pender, Deirdre Jacob, Annie McCarrick, Jo Jo Dullard, Fiona Sinnott, Eva Brennan and Ciara Breen.

The bodies of the women were never found.

Garda sources suggest that the abduction of Jastine Valdez was sexually-motivated and that Hennessy panicked and killed his victim more quickly than planned.

The nature in which he was able to successfully abduct Ms Valdez on a public road suggests that it is unlikely it was a first-time violent offence.

Hennessy grew up in Ballybrack, south Dublin, but was living with his wife and two young children in Bray, Co Wicklow, before being shot dead by police on Sunday night.

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman is investigating the shooting of the suspect by an officer at a carpark in Cherrywood, Co Wicklow.

One line of inquiry is that Hennessy ran at gardai with a knife.
