Heartbreak as elderly Irish couple die on same day at nursing home just hours apart

THE death of an elderly couple on the same day just hours apart has brought sorrow to a care home in rural Ireland.

Gerry and Máire Ryan, both originally from Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, passed away on Monday, February 19 at the Curragh Lawn Nursing Home in Co. Kildare.

The heartbroken family of the well-liked couple are now set to bury the two grandparents together.

They will repose at Anderson & Leahy's Funeral Home, Newbridge, this evening from 4pm, with prayers at 7pm.

Removal will take place on Thursday morning at 10.30am to arrive at St. Conleth's Parish Church, Newbridge for funeral mass at 11am.

Burial will take place at St Patrick’s Cemetery on Waterford Road, Clonmel following the service.

Mr Ryan was a retired Army Commandant from Clare Barracks, The Curragh where he had a very successful career before working with FÁS.

Mrs Ryan was the niece of Frank Drohan – who was the leader of the Volunteers in Clonmel during the 1916 Rising.

Gerry’s father Jim Ryan was also a Volunteer in Clonmel during that momentous year.

The Ryan family have asked for any donations to be made to the Kildare branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, according to RIP.ie.

The couple are survived by their loving daughter Geraldine, grandchildren Alan and Sarah, along with Máire’s siblings Eithne, Una and their extended family, relatives and friends.

May they both rest in peace.
