Irish mum goes viral after hilariously trying – and failing – to give daughter a driving lesson

A PANIC-STRICKEN Kilkenny mum has become an online sensation after her attempt at giving a driving lesson to her teenage daughter went viral.

Breda Gardner was the talk of TikTok after taking her daughter Iona out for a drive.

It’s familiar enough territory for any parent with a teenager eager to enjoy the freedom driving offers, especially in some rural areas of Ireland.

However, like many mums and dads before her, Breda found that what works in theory does not always play out quite the same in practice.

In the clip shared first on TikTok and then reposted on Twitter, she can be seen instructing Iona on how to properly move off.

Things soon go awry though when the teen over-accelerates, causing Breda to let out a rather unfortunate scream.

"Gently take it off the clutch at the same time (as pushing the accelerator),” Breda instructs Iona in the clip.

"Don't put it down... just put it down gently."

Yet as Iona attempts to put her advice into practice, she ends up accelerating too quickly, causing the car to speed forward.

Breda screams but it’s not long before the pair find themselves laughing at the situation.

A warm, funny clip, the video was shared by Breda’s son Fionn, who posted it online alongside the sweet caption: “I watch this when I feel sad.”

It’s proven popular too, amassing almost 500,000 views on TikTok alone.

With Ireland currently in lockdown and driving schools currently closed, Breda could well be back behind the wheel with her daughter over the next few weeks.

Here’s hoping it goes off without a hitch next time.
