Irish Showband singer Ivan Vaughan dies after being swept away in floods

IRISH showband singer Ivan Vaughan has died at the age of 70, after being swept away in flood waters in Co. Monaghan.

Mr Vaughan, who performed around Ireland with his showband Plattermen under the name Simon Scott in the 1960s and 70s, had been reported missing in the early hours of Monday.

His body was found 10 metres from his car at Corraghdown, Glaslough in Co. Monaghan at 11.25am yesterday morning, with a Garda spokesperson saying it is thought he had been "swept away".

Mr Vaughan was driving home to his native Caledon in Co. Tyrone after performing a gig when it is believed he got trapped in a dipped part of a flooded road.

He was reported missing after failing to return home and the discovery was made on Monday morning.

While Mr Vaughan may be remembered for his days with his showband, he was more recently performing around Ireland as a solo artist.

His is the first death confirmed in Ireland from Storm Desmond, which saw both Britain and Ireland battered by gale-force winds and torrential rain over the weekend.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today to establish a cause of death but Gardaí are not treating it as suspicious.
