Kerry named second best spot for family holidays in Europe

COUNTY KERRY has been named the second best spot in Europe for a family holiday – beating destinations in the likes of Spain, Wales, Austria and France to the position.

The Irish location is only beaten by Kent, the so-called Garden of England, in the top ten list of Europe’s Best Places for Family Holidays, as revealed in the Lonely Planet Best in Europe 2015 travel guide released this month.

Co. Kerry, which is commended for having “some of Ireland’s most gape-worthy scenery” in the new title, places highly due to its ability to “appeal to travellers of all ages”.

“Mysterious islands off a craggy coastline; mist-wreathed mountains and lakes; castles, abbeys and other ruins to explore…no wonder County Kerry appeals to the imagination of travellers of all ages,” the Lonely Planet authors state.

Highlighting the Dingle Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry and a trip to see Fungie the bottlenose dolphin at Dingle Harbour among activities to indulge in in the county, the guide claims the area is perfect for those looking for adventure.

“This wild part of Ireland is perfect for children (and adults) with a sense of adventure,” the authors explain.

“So if you're visiting during the summer months, test their sea legs on the short ferry to Great Blasket Island or, for older would-be sailors, take the boat to the Skelligs; admire the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean during a horse ride along Rossbeigh Beach or let your water babes sign up for surf school; take an epic journey through Killarney National Park, where the Gap of Dunloe trip combines a boat trip with walking, cycling or a pony and trap,” they add.

“Oh, and while you're there, don’t forget a child-pleasing side trip to see Fungie, the wild bottlenose dolphin that has been visiting Dingle Harbour regularly for more than 30 years.”
