Knuckledusters and knives among weapons seized at Belfast International Airport since April

KNUCKLEDUSTERS, knives and batons were among dozens of weapons seized from travellers at Belfast International Airport over the past few months.

The haul of weapons, details of which have been revealed by the UK Border Force, also includes a BB gun and a stun gun disguised as a mobile phone.

The weapons have been seized since April from people returning to Northern Ireland from holiday, with the majority coming back from Poland, Bulgaria and the US.

Those from whom the weapons were seized included teenagers and adults, with the majority having an address in Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for the Border Force said: “Depending on the specific circumstances of the individual cases, passengers were either given a warning and allowed to continue their journeys or they were referred to partner agencies for further investigation and prosecution where appropriate.”

Once any legal proceedings have concluded, the weapons are destroyed.

“These types of weapons glamorise violence and can cause devastating damage – they have no place whatsoever in our society,” said John Oldham, Assistant Director of Border Force North.
