Irishman dupes elderly London man and makes off with £5000 of jewellery

POLICE are looking for a man with an Irish accent in connection with the theft of jewellery from a house in Hackney, East London after a pensioner was duped by bogus callers.

The 81-year-old male resident told officers that he had opened his door on Brooke Road, Clapton on January 18 after to a man claiming to be from the Water Board said he was investigating a water leak and needed to gain access to his property.

Once inside, he distracted the victim and two accomplices entered the address, stealing a quantity of distinctive Asian jewellery. The stolen Asian gold is valued at approximately £5,000 and includes necklaces, earrings and pendants.

Images released by police show a long metal chain with a religious pendant, a gold necklace, three gold rings engraved with victim's initials and a pair of chandelier-style earrings.

The suspect is described as a white man with an Irish accent. He was aged between 40 and 45 years old, 5ft 8ins tall, of large build with brown hair and was wearing a black jacket.

Detective Inspector Martin Sloan, from Hackney Borough’s Serious Acquisitive Crime Unit, said: "I would like to remind residents, especially the elderly, to always ask for identification before letting people into their homes. Treat every stranger with caution. If you are worried, dial 999 immediately."
