NASA releases breathtaking image of Dublin captured by astronauts from space

A NASA ASTRONAUT has released a stunning photograph of Dublin taken at night from the International Space Station (ISS).

Texas-born Shane Kimbrough, who has been aboard the station for six months, shared the image on his Twitter account, adding that he can't wait to visit the Irish capital soon.

"One of my favourite cities - Dublin, Ireland," he wrote.

"Look forward to seeing all of my friends there next year. Slàinte!"

Kimbrough is part of the crew of Expedition 65 which began its mission in April and is due to complete it later this month.

The ISS was launched in 1998 as a multinational collaborative project involving five participating space agencies: NASA (US), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe) and CSA (Canada).

The station, which has been manned ever since it was constructed, serves as a research laboratory and observatory, orbiting the Earth.

It is the largest artificial object in space and the largest satellite in low Earth orbit, regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth's surface.
